Walk- Don’t Walk Road Tested Chair

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

There’s nothing pedestrian about this chair. Artisan John Carter combines fine art, interior design and social commentary for a truly one-of-a-kind creation. The New York City “Walk/Don’t Walk” signs actually work - and a remote control is included to turn them on and off. The legs are made from reconfigured, customized steel street sign brackets, with galvanized, heavy duty self-leveling feet.

The chair can come complete with all the genuine scuffs and stains of its New York City roots or can come “squeaky clean” with a fresh coat of paint. (more…)

Buy a Pixel, Get A Tree

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

Similar to the “Million Dollar Page”, Pixelfortree.com, is the same concept as far as the website itself goes, but also does something for the environment.

If you have something to advertise, or if you just want to let people know that you care about the environment, you should purchase some pixels from Pixelfortree.com. They have set up a website and are selling off space on the homepage 1 pixel at a time. For 1€ , or roughly about $1.50, you get 1 tree planted in your name. For example, buying a 10×10 pixel space on the homepage will not only get a tiny ad, but also 100 trees planted in your name. (more…)

Wash your laundry with a hand crank with the Wonderwash

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

This energy saving gadget would be perfect for someone with no space for a washer in their apartment, or to save on energy costs.

The Wonderwash washes a 5 lb load in just a few minutes while using 90% less water and detergent than conventional machines. It requires no electricity, just the power of your arm.

It’s obviously quite a bit smaller than a regular machine, accepting about half of the weight of an average top loading machine. (more…)

Sony’s New Twirl And Take

Friday, December 14th, 2007

Sony continues to get green with an innovative new concept camera called the Twirl N’Take, which allows the user to spin a disk and generate enough power for a single digital snapshot. Also, if you’re still worried that your fellow Greenpeace canvassers will give you a hard time about your gadget habit, the body of the camera is made of “plant-based” materials for maximum bio-friendliness. Unfortunately, twirling isn’t the most efficient power source, so there’s no screen - you have to hook up to a computer to see your photo. (more…)

Pure Eco Plus Range

Friday, December 14th, 2007

The EcoPlus range aims to cut its environmental impact in a number of ways; they’re more power efficient for a start, both when in use and when on standby. They’re also made with recycled materials where possible, and are finished with water-based varnish far less harmful than some other coatings. Some of the radios also feature rechargeable batteries, which avoids disposable alkaline cells being thrown in landfill sites.

The packaging, too, has been given some thought. (more…)

Nokia Eco Sensor Concept

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

Nokia has been playing with some concept ideas, coming up with the Eco Sensor Concept that comes in two pieces - the handset itself as well as a wearable strap. The strap is to monitor the owner’s vital statistics in addition to local weather conditions. There is no need for batteries with the wearable strap since it will hold solar cells that relies upon the power of the sun for juice instead. As for the phone, it will not be bigger than a relatively chunky timepiece, and will be manufactured from plant-based plastics and 100% recycled steel. (more…)

It’s not only powered up by a charger which is 94 per cent more efficient than the Energy Star requirements (and which will be added to the entire Nokia line over the next year), even the covers are made from bio-sourced materials (the plastic is made from plants, rather than from petrol).

It also comes in a smaller box which will reduce the amount of trucks to ship this device by 5000.
