Meet The Super Cheap Eco-Friendly Tata

Does a brand new car for $2,500 sound good for you? Then Tata Motors has just the car for you.

If you live in India, that is. The tiny little orb of a car, made its debut Thursday at the New Delhi Auto Expo. It is expected to go on sale to Indian consumers later this year, but it won’t hit the export market in the next few years.

Officially, it’s name is the Tata Nano, but its alias is the People’s Car. At that price, it’s definitely intended for the masses. Not all at once, of course–the 10-foot long car will hold only about four people at any given time, and not much in the way of luggage or grocery bags.

The cabin of the car seats four people–”comfortably,” the company says, “with generous leg space and head room.” The four-door (plus tail gate) car is taller than it is wide: 1.6 meters tall by 1.5 meters across. From front to back, it measures 3.1 meters.

The car has a two-cylinder, 623-cc fuel-injection engine. Tata says that this marks the first time that a two-cylinder gas engine is being used in a car with a single balancer shaft.

It’s interesting that I’d see the Nano on Cool Green Gadgets! What makes it green? I’d be interested to know!

“According to Tata Group’s Chairman Ratan Tata, the Nano is a 33 PS (33 hp/24 kW) car with a 624 cc rear engine and rear wheel drive, making it the first time a 2-cylinder gasoline engine, and has a mileage of 4.55 L/100 km (51.7 mpg (US), 62.8 mpg (UK)) under city road conditions, and 3.85 L/100 km on highways (61.1 mpg (US), 73.4 mpg (UK)).

Apparently the Nano complies with Bharat Stage-III and Euro-IV emission standards, and if that is true then simple mathematics and evidence is there to prove that the Nano is indeed more eco-friendly than most other cars.”

Viraj: It’s a 2 cylinder engine car, how could it NOT be green.

In America we drive 8 cylinder gaz guzzling monsters. (e.g. Cadillac Escalade Hummer, etc)
